These are among the most popular questions I've received about Don Rich
1. Don Rich is buried in Bakersfield, CA.
2. What can you tell us about Don's Guitars?
Don played Fender Telecaster guitars, and during my time with the band (1972-1976) always used the same guitar for touring and recording. It was a late 1966, Standard, with no modifications, standard pickups, and painted red, white, and blue by Gene Moles of Bakersfield, CA. He used Ernie Ball 9,11,16,26w,36w,46w in nickel gauge. He used a Fender Twin Reverb on most of the sessions without any effects or processors. In concert, the contract rider stated that the band was to be provided with Fender or equivalent amps. He used "Fender Thin" picks that either had a Don Rich or Buck Owens Studio logo on them and often gave them away at concerts.
3. What type of Fender amp did Don use and was there any modifications done?
Don played a 1966, original "Blackface Twin" with 12 inch Jenson speakers. There were no modifications to this amp.
4. Where is Don's family and what are they doing these days?
Unfortunately, I lost contact with Don's family when I left the band in 1975. I hear bits and pieces about them, but nothing that I've documented as true or false.
5. What was it like playing with Don?
Don was one of the most gifted musicians I have ever had the pleasure of working with. We recorded at least twice a week in the studio together on not only Buck's projects, but other Capital Records artists and independent artists as well. On the road, he always seemed to be so comfortable under even the most stressful situations. I suppose it could be said that although Buck had three sons, Don was the "adopted son" that he shared all of his musical adventures with during there time together.
6. How many recordings did you do with Don?
I recorded on 16 albums with Don for Buck, and another 20-30 Capital Records artist albums. I've lost count of the singles released during this time period. Independent projects were well over 200 sessions for other various artists.
This tribute is in no way to represent
any official statement about Don. It represents my friendship
with him from my viewpoint and remembrances.
